The Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012 would have spent $1 billion over five years to put veterans to work tending to federal lands, and in the nation’s police and fire departments. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) based her plan of FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), but Republicans opposed the bill because they said there is no proof that it would work

Four Republican Senators were co-sponsors of “The Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012” voted against the bill for a total of 40 Republican Senators.

“Sen. John Boozman (R) Arkansas, Sen. Mike Johanns (R) Nebraska, Sen. Richard Burr (R) North Carolina, Sen. Pat Toomey (R) Pennsylvania all voted NO today, on the Veteran's Jobs Corps bill during a filibuster to get a waiver for the bill to be sent forward as it was revenue neutral. While it was recognized that the bill would face opposition in the House, it was considered a real "go" for the Senate because this bill was truly bi-partisan. All four of these Republican Senators were co-sponsors of the bill, helping to write it and getting their input into the bill. Yet today, they voted against it, killing it for this session of Congress. It will not be brought up again until the new Congress is seated after the elections.

One of our own Patrick Murphy, former (D) Representative from Pennsylvania, Patrick Murphy is a former Paratrooper and a teacher of Constitutional Law at West Point, and is also the first Iraq Veteran to be elected to Congress. He called the votes of these Senators "a disgrace and I don't know how they can look at themselves in the mirror."
